Jim Cherry
Writing Under The Influence of Rock ‘n’ Roll!

Jim has always been attuned to images from the first kaleidoscope memories of infancy, memories of his mother reading to him, acting out all the parts and the pictures manifesting themselves in his head. Growing up he witnessed the riot and revolution of the 60’s with some of it happening right outside his front door in Chicago. When he was five he danced on a street corner and made it rain. It was like discovering power or a new science. It was child’s play.

Jim has always been interested in books and movies. He started reading on his own at an early age and showed an interest in just about every subject he came across. Some of Jim’s formative experiences and memories were from movies. Frequently “running away from home” to the movie theater or library. With the encouragement of a teacher Jim read the classics.

Jim discovered art and wanted to be artist but discovered he couldn’t draw. At about the same time he discovered Ernest Hemingway and how writers could be artists. Jim started writing everything from Mad Magazine like parodies to Thoreauvian philosophical tracts. Jim has lead a writer’s life of experience, traveling, meeting people and engaging in their stories and learning about them and himself.

If you want to know more about Jim you can find him in the pages of his books. In between the lines.

Becoming Angel- Jim’s debut novel, a roman-a’-clef, that displays the sizzle and heat of a first time novelist. Becoming Angel is the story of John Beckett, a man who thinks he has his life under control, with a job that provides him with the money to a lifestyle he embraces, sex, drugs, and rock ‘n‘ roll. When he meets and fall in love with Paige Welles he discovers how close to the edge of chaos his life actually has been. Becoming Angel is a novel borne of the same era as “Bright Lights, Big City,” and “Less Than Zero.”

Stranger Souls- is a fracturing of a personality, Jim’s. Stranger Souls explores all the potentials of a personality whether it’s of an alcoholic down to his last drink, or the rock star, the vampire who preys on humanity with no conscience, or even an ordinary person contemplating his relationship with his father on the day of his funeral. Stranger Souls is a melange of stories that run the gamut of different genres from literary fiction, to science fiction and fantasy. Stories such as “Are You Safe?” have shown their prescience in our use of technology, and how we can be used by that very same technology.

The Last Stage- Michael Desmond is an aging professional student looking for a way out of a small town and away from a girlfriend who increasingly wants more from him. Inspired by friends telling him he looks like Jim Morrison, and a chance meeting with Ray Manzarek he takes a chance on his dreams and starts a Doors tribute band. He sidetracks a band on their road to fame, and together they experience the exhilaration of being a touring Rock ‘n’ Roll band, the long hours, the agents, the groupies, record company executives and the growing ego of Michael Desmond.

The band is carried to the doors of stardom when they’re offered the gig of their Rock ‘n’ Roll dreams, playing the Whisky a go-go! In Los Angeles Michael meets former child star Jimmy Stark who shows him the monster fame, celebrity, and stardom can be. Crashing studios and parties Michael assembles an entourage of wanna-bes and has beens. When Michael and the band meet their destinies on the stage of the Whisky a go-go Michael Desmond is afforded the last stage he has. Jim is currently working with an artist to develop The Last Stage into a graphic novel.

Jim’s poetry has appeared in magazines such as Struggle, Tight, and Taproot Magazine. Jim’s short stories have appeared in The Doors Collector Magazine, Raintiger, Literal Translations and Sonar4. Jim’s reviews have appeared in The Landing Dock, Reviewer Magazine and he is a top rated Amazon reviewer, and writes The Doors Examiner and for Big Blend's 'Rants, Raves & Rock' Radio Magazine.
